Description :

Mário João Carlos do Rosário de Brito Miranda, widely known as Mario Miranda, was a celebrated Indian cartoonist and painter born in Damão and raised in Loutolim, Goa. Renowned for his whimsical depictions of Goan village life and bustling urban scenes, Miranda’s career spanned advertising, journalism, and international exhibitions. His signature style—marked by intricate line work, humorous social observation, and a cast of recurring characters—graced the pages of The Illustrated Weekly of India, The Times of India, Femina, and Economic Times.

After early stints in Portugal and London, where his work appeared in Punch, Mad, and Lilliput, Miranda returned to India and became a beloved chronicler of everyday life. He illustrated numerous books, including children’s titles and travelogues, and held solo exhibitions in over 22 countries. Though he avoided political satire, his art offered sharp, affectionate commentary on Indian society.

Honoured with the Padma Shri (1988), Padma Bhushan (2002), and posthumously the Padma Vibhushan (2012), Miranda also received international accolades from Spain and Portugal. He spent his later years in his ancestral home in Goa, continuing to sketch until his passing in 2011. His legacy endures through his prolific output, timeless humour, and enduring influence on Indian visual culture.
