Description :

B. Vithal (1935–1992) was born in Maharashtra in 1935. He emerged as a formidable figure in Indian modern art, celebrated both as a master sculptor and a painter of remarkable sensitivity. He trained at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai—an institution renowned for its rigorous emphasis on life drawing and classical sculpture. Surrounded by casts of Greco-Roman statuary and immersed in live model studio sessions, Vithal developed a profound understanding of the human form, which became central to both his sculptural and painterly practices.

It was at Sir J.J. that he met fellow artist B. Prabha, who would become his lifelong partner in both art and life. The two married in 1956 and held a joint exhibition that same year, marking the beginning of a shared creative journey. His subjects ranged from horses and musicians to nudes and everyday figures from Maharashtra. While his bulls embody strength and force, his horses reveal a more playful, exploratory side—translating their form into two dimensions with fluidity and inventiveness.

Vithal lived and worked in Mumbai until his passing in 1992.
