Description :

M. Sivanesan (1940–2015) Born in Chennai, M. Sivanesan was an artist whose works were deeply introspective, often reflecting his personal moods rather than aiming for overt commentary. A graduate of the Madras Government College of Arts and Crafts (1956), Sivanesan was captivated by the human form, and his practice centered primarily around figurative compositions. His artistic expression-marked by quiet lyricism and an understated palette-garnered international recognition early in his career, with a notable award from the International Inter Church in New York (1962).

Over the decades, Sivanesan exhibited widely across India and abroad, including Bangkok (1976), Los Angeles (1977), Ottawa (1978), New York and Washington DC (1979), and additional group exhibitions in Tokyo, New York, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai. Working between studios in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, Sivanesan remained devoted to the subtle emotional tenor of everyday life, allowing his canvases to evoke contemplative pauses rather than assertive declarations. His legacy endures in both private collections and public retrospectives, affirming his position as a quiet force in post-independence Indian art.
