Description :

Amrut Patel (b. 1947) is an Indian painter whose practice has evolved over five decades through deep engagement with form, space, tradition, and intuitive expression. Born in Mosal village, Gujarat, and raised in Ahmedabad, he studied at Sheth CN College of Fine Arts, where his exceptional skill earned him early promotion and a fellowship. He later taught at the college and also studied fresco painting at Banasthali University.

In the 1970s, Amrut explored the neo-Tantra movement, focusing on the idea of growth in non-living beings. Rather than its spiritual philosophy, he was drawn to the formal language of Tantra—experimenting with central compositions, geometric symbols, and lyrical flow. Over time, he moved beyond its structure to develop his own distinctive visual vocabulary.

A disciplined daily practice in the 1980s and 90s led him toward abstraction and spontaneity. Inspired by miniature painting traditions and Gujarati poetry, particularly Tame by Madhav Ramanuj, Amrut began blending figuration with metaphor, mythology, and contemporary concerns like war and environmental degradation.

Amrut Patel has traveled widely, participating in/ presiding over art camps and exhibiting his work in cities such as New York, Kuwait, London, Moscow, Seoul, Muscat, and Mexico City. Now based between Delhi and North Carolina, he continues to remain committed to abstraction, driven by gesture, spontaneity, and a meditative connection to space and form. In addition, Amrut Patel is actively exploring digital painting as an evolving medium in his artistic practice.
