<p>Abid Miyah Lal Miyah Syed, widely known as A. L. Syed, was a twentieth-century Indian photographer celebrated for his dramatically lit black-and-white images of rural India and princely states. Born in Varnavada, Gujarat, Syed was introduced to photography through his elder brother, K. L. Syed, official photographer to the Nawab of Palanpur. His earliest known work, a 1923 sunset at Chowpatty Beach, won first prize in a contest by the Illustrated Weekly of India, where his photographs were regularly featured. From 1925 to 1940, Syed published a monthly column in Kumar, pairing his images with written reflections. He worked extensively for royal courts across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Kashmir, forging close ties with rulers such as the Nawab of Palanpur, the Maharana of Udaipur, and Gayatri Devi of Jaipur.</p>

<p>His pictorialist style was marked by low-angle compositions, high contrasts of light and shadow, and a sombre tonal quality, placed&nbsp;him among India&rsquo;s earliest conscious practitioners of the movement. Syed&rsquo;s international recognition began with Traveller of the East (1934), included in Odhams Press&rsquo; World&rsquo;s Best Photographs and exhibited worldwide. Later accolades included his award-winning Difficult Ascent (Tokyo, 1977), an honorary fellowship from the India International Photographic Council (1983), and his role inaugurating the Illustrated Weekly of India centennial exhibition (1980). He also contributed stills to Bollywood films, notably Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson&rsquo;s disease in 1971, Syed continued photographing until his death in 1991. His legacy endures as a pioneering pictorialist whose work bridged royal commissions, rural India, and international recognition.</p>
