<p>V. S. Adurkar (1907-1984) was and Indian painter, art educationist and administrator. Originally from the Konkan region in Maharashtra, Adurkar enrolled at the Sir J. J. School of Art in 1928. Artists Gopal Dueskar, Vishwanath Nageshkar, J. D. Gondhalekar and Ambika Dhurandhar were his batchmates. He completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1931 and won the Dolly Cursetjee award; and by 1936 he completed his training in sculpture. In the same year he travelled to London for further studies and earned his A.R.C.A degree from the Westminister school at the Royal College of Art. He returned to India in 1939 and held a solo show of his works at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai.</p>

<p>Adurkar became the first Indian director of Sir J. J. School of Art in 1947 and held the post for 7 years. In 1954, he returned to England to study modern printmaking techniques. He became the first Indian artist to earn honourable memberships such as M.R.E and A.R.C.A of the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers, London.</p>

<p>Adurkar passed away in 1984. After his demise, his select artworks were exhibited at the Silver Jubilee of the Maharashtra State Art Exhibition 1984-85.</p>
